#I Have Embraced!
When I studied Eating Psychology, one of the modules covered body image. I dutifully completed the module & from then I ignored it. I didn’t promote myself as being able to help women with body image issues. Then I discovered Taryn Brumfitt, founder of the Body Image Movement & I was immediately hooked. Weirdly the Universe started throwing body image stuff at me. An 18 year old came to me for coaching around body image – almost all my previous clients were over 40! I signed up to the Body Image Movement (BIM) website & liked their Facebook page. I was fascinated by Taryn’s energy & passion to change the attitude to body image on a global level, despite being an average mum with 3 small children.
Just google Taryn Brumfitt to read about her journey from body loather to body lover or even better buy her book, Embrace. It's a great read.
The images we see in magazines, on TV, on the Catwalk & in movies are just not real, they are not achieveable. Almost all of them have been photo-shopped and/or airbrushed. No wonder we can't meet the standard - it's just impossible.
I digress, so back to my story. From following the BIM Facebook page I learned that Taryn had written a book called Embrace & just made a documentary called Embrace. Given my business name is Embrace All of You, surely this was a message from the Universe that was calling me to pay attention to that module I had studied. The documentary was due for release on 4th August but a preview was announced for Perth on 26th July & Taryn was doing a Q&A after the film. I was there like a shot. I was totally blown away – I cried & laughed, was inspired & humbled but came away with a passion to help spread Taryn’s message. I couldn’t wait to tell everyone about the film & greatly anticipated the general release in August. Sadly when the release happened the only cinema screening Embrace in Perth was the one where I’d seen the preview. I knew that many people just wouldn’t end up seeing it for whatever reason. Then I discovered that anybody could apply to host a private screening. Bingo!! Why couldn’t I do that? Well of course my inner critic (aka Lexie the Lizard) had a lot to say about that!
Who do you think you are?
You’ll never sell enough tickets
It’ll be a disaster
You’ve never done anything like this before
You’re not like Taryn
YOU’RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!!!
I politely told Lexie to mind her own business, give me her clipboard (she always carries a clipboard) & go have a cocktail & some chocolate because I had this covered. You see, if I have the clipboard – I have the control.
Before I knew it I’d applied & been accepted to host a screening in my local cinema. I had about 2 weeks to get 62 tickets sold which would guarantee it went ahead, then a further 80 tickets were available to fill the theatre. To cut a long story short I hit the 62 tickets before the deadline & then on the night had just 2 seats left. I had great support from friend, family & my local community but I was very proud of my achievement. This is myself & my beautiful daughter who helped on the night.
Here are some statistics & quotes from the film:
These are scary statistics. The quote that really got me thinking was the one from Turia Pitt. Turia suffered horrific disfiguring burns during a bush fire while competing in an Extreme Marathon in the WA Pilbara & yet she is still able to love her body. If she can do it so can you & I. If just one person that attended my screening begins to take baby steps towards loving their body then I have made a small contribution to Taryn’s goal. I have already had an invitation to speak to a group of young teen girls & what an inspiration they were. They had no hang ups about their bodies at all. I was very impressed but understand that that particular group is probably in the minority - so just the rest of the female population to tackle now. I have lots of ideas to help women Embrace their bodies. I'm working on the possibility of creating a support group for women who would like to get together regularly to discuss body image issues so look out for that in the new year. I'd also like to provide a workshop or even a retreat.
To be continued….. I will talk more about body image in the December Blog & Newsletter. In the mean time there are still private screenings of Embrace happening around Perth so if you want to be inspired go to:
Select your state & buy yourself a ticket – drag your friends along & if you have teenage daughters take them too or even boys. Here is a link to the trailer just to whet your appetite:
I will finish with my favourite quote from Taryn which is at the end of the trailer. For some reason this quote ever fails to make me tear up & even sob on many occasions. It is so powerful.
