Are you really just lazy?

I recently discovered Tapping (aka Emotional Freedom Technique). Brad Yates is one of the world's leading teachers of this technique & he has many videos online covering a wide range of topics, so you can just tap along with him & change your mindset about many things. So while looking for a topic t,he other day I found one about believing you are lazy. This intrigued me as I often hear my clients say "Oh, if only I wasn't so lazy I could do this or that but I'm just lazy - I can't be bothered".
Well Brad Yates has a different opinion about being lazy. He believes that the reason we avoid doing things has nothing to do with being lazy. It's all about fear. The real reason we don't follow through with the things we 'want' to do is all about resistance, avoidance, fear or simply staying away from anything that takes us out of our comfort zone. By saying that we feel lazy we're just numbing out. We're not just avoiding doing the task itself, but by blaming laziness we're avoiding acknowledging what's really holding us back.
So when you hear yourself saying you're lazy take notice & start asking yourself what's really going on. This is the start of becoming aware of what might really be holding you back. Have a conversation with yourself. It might go something like this:
Do I actually never do anything or am I just not doing some things?
What sort of things do I avoid doing?
is there a pattern in the things I avoid?
Why might I be avoiding doing those particular things?
Do they make me uncomfortable?
Are they scary?
Do they seem too hard?
Am I afraid I won't be good at them?
Am I afraid I might get them wrong?
Is something else going on in my life that's draining my energy right now
Is this causing me to just want to comfort or pamper myself?
Is this stopping me from focusing on something new right now, while I'm worrying about this other thing?
All these things cause discomfort & we are wired to avoid pain or discomfort. Blaming our inaction on laziness is our way of protecting ourselves from discomfort. Even questioning why we don't want to do the task makes us uncomfortable because if we figure out why we are really avoiding the task, then we'll have to face the fear. Blaming inaction on laziness keeps us safe. It's the easy option. It's a clever strategy but being safe keeps us stuck which doesn't help us or anybody else. We deserve better.

It's time to face the truth. If you were truly lazy you would never do anything. I can almost guarantee there are times when you are far from lazy. You get things done & love that sense of achievement. So if you are not a truly lazy person, ask yourself what is really holding you back. Face the discomfort, identify what the real fear is & deal with it. Then get out there & get the job done.
