What I do for fun
It's not just the pleasure of food that creates this increase in metabolism. Pleasurable activities, otherwise known as fun, induce a physiological relaxation response, giving our bodies a much needed break from the chronic stress response that many of us are constantly in. Pleasure produces endorphins - the feel good hormones.
Why is fun important?
The Cambridge Dictionary definition of fun is 'pleasure, enjoyment or entertainment'.
In his book 'The Slow Down Diet", Marc David (Founder of the Institute for the Psychology of Eating) refers to pleasure as Vitamin P when talking about the importance of including pleasurable foods in the diet. Everybody knows that you need to get a healthy amount of all the vitamins and Vitamin P is no exception. Humans are genetically programmed to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Marc says when you are turned on by food, you turn on metabolism.
They are produced throughout the body but particularly in the brain and the digestive system and one of the things they do is actually burn body fat. Plus more endorphins in the digestive tract equals more blood and oxygen flowing there, the very things that increase digestion, create more efficient calorie burning and provide better assimilation of nutrients.
So what does all this mean? It means that having fun can actually help you digest your food more efficently, burn more calories and maybe even shed a few kilos. So get out there have fun and live life to the fullest!!!
